The Vision Behind SpaceTrio

“To all mankind — may we never find space so vast, planets so cold, heart and mind so empty that we cannot fill them with love and warmth.”

– Garth, “Dagger of the Mind”

Fandom has been around a long time – Star Trek’s fandom in particular. We may have recently celebrated the franchise’s 50th anniversary in 2016 and in the last decade seen a reboot of the Original Series with a new, younger cast of actors, but that does not stop this fandom’s years of rapport from being threatened by the ever-changing landscape of the Internet.  For fans whose interests are tailored to an already tiny corner of their fandom – for instance, by adoring a pairing like Kirk/Spock/McCoy – such a critical event like the demise of a social platform can mean the loss of a home.

As SpaceTrio’s owner, I am here to give a testimony. Recent ownership changes over at Livejournal have left me little choice but to find a new place for my fanfiction in order to retain some rights over my own creations. To me, the sadness comes with cutting ties to the platform where I first met other McSpirk enthusiasts and cultivated warm friendships with people who share my interests in Star Trek.

In wondering where I might go, perhaps to DreamWidth like many other Livejournal users have decided, I realized that a simple migration to a new blogging site would not negate the feeling of disconnect. For lovers of McSpirk (and the Triumvirate in general), there has never been one place to call home. We are scattered across the worldwide web.   On some more popular media-driven sites you can find one or, at best, a handful of us. Most of these platforms are too broad in content and network for fans of “rare-pairs” to stand out. Our contributions are often not easily found, and there is no central hub that showcases all the hidden gems.

I have loved Star Trek and especially the characters Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy – from all ‘verses! – since I first delved into this franchise some seven years ago.   I am afraid of losing what community exists today.  Therefore, I want to do more than simply migrate a writing journal.  SpaceTrio is my vision of platform that supports Triumvirate fans and encourages our community to thrive.

The motto of this small space in the WorldWideWeb is simple:  Keep your hailing frequencies open, folks, and never stop trekkin’!
